Tuning In
The tuning in part of the inquiry cycle is a time to engage students in the Exhibition. During this time the students were introduced to the idea of Exhibition and they took part in many community building exercises to get them thinking like a team. We encouraged conversations around what Exhibition is, and what it is not. The students reflected on their experiences as viewers of the Exhibition from past years, and what they hoped to accomplish now that it is their turn.

After discussing and categorizing student concerns about Exhibition, we decided to take some of the bigger themes that emerged and have the students create skits to show how they would handle the tough situations.

Today the students learned about how to use Google Docs collaboratively as well as how to employ proper etiquette when collaborating on a document. The children worked with the Approaches to Learning (Transdisciplinary Skills) to not only familiarize themselves with Google Docs, but also with the skills they will be using during this journey. Together they set up Essential Agreements for working collaboratively online.

The students were very excited today to begin their online journals using Weebly. They had the opportunity to explore the site, choose their theme, and create their five main pages. Students began to record their initial Exhibition reflections on their Tuning In pages. We look forward to watching these online journals grow!

This week the students dove into the Transdisciplinary Theme. They took a close look at the science and asked the question, "What is science?" Together they brainstormed all the science topics that they could think of. They then organized their topics into four branches of science - Earth and Space Science, Life Science, Physical Science, and Technology/Math/Engineering. It took them two days, but check out all the possibilities below!

It was an exciting week for our fourth graders! Students worked together to come up with their ideas for possible Central Ideas (see the "Bottoms Up" photos below). The teachers then used student thinking to generate a Central Idea to drive this year's Exhibition: Science and technology impact individuals, society, and the environment.
