Taking Action
During this phase of the inquiry cycle the students are asking themselves, "How can we do something with what we have learned?" and "How has my thinking changed since the beginning of our inquiry?". Keeping the Central Idea in mind the students are taking action in a variety of ways to showcase the ways in which science and technology have affected our lives and learning at Whitby. Make sure to come on Tuesday, May 3rd, at 6:00pm to find out all about the amazing action that our students have taken!
f.i.n. (The Future is now)
Through their research F.I.N. realized how much screen time affects they way we interact with the world. They created a survey to find out how much time the Whitby Community is spending on screens. They were shocked by the results so they took action by proposing a screen free day to the Leadership Committee. In addition, they made a checklist to help ensure that all new technology that is brought to Whitby will enhance learning and stay true to our mission statement.
tech busters
The Tech Busters team set out to raise awareness about the negative effects too much screen time can have on your health - both physically and emotionally. They joined forces with the F.I.N. group to propose a screen free day at Whitby. In addition, they created stickers to help you stay aware of how much time you are spending on a screen.
creation nation
Creation Nation created a video about MakerSpace to try to raise awareness about the need for a MakerSpace at Whitby. They also wanted to make sure that the student's voices were heard in the creation of the Whitby MakerSpace as well as drum up some excitement in the community. They surveyed LE and ME students, compiled and analyzed the data and will present this to Dr. Frye and the PA.
LEONp (let's eat organic, not processed)
LEONP made a video to raise awareness about the importance of eating organic vs. processed food. In addition, they will be working in the Whitby Garden to plant organic vegetables to be able to share with the Whitby community.
Life savers
Emily took action by teaching the primary students about how germs are spread and how we can prevent illness by washing our hands. Bruce and Lorenzo wanted to make sure the water at Whitby was safe. They tested the water for bacteria and shared their findings with the PA. Tabby made a game to encourage eating heart healthy food and taught the community how to take your pulse.
climate changers
The Climate Changers raised awareness about Earth Day by going from class to class to help students brainstorm ways to counteract climate change through everyday actions by saving energy. They had everyone take an Earth Day Pledge to ensure that we're all helping save the planet.
space race
The Space Race group set out raise awareness of space exploration and the discoveries we have due to space travel. They also purchased an acre of land on Mars and subsequently (temporarily) changed the Whitby Mission statement to reflect this new land.
What's Up Doc?
Mr. Smith inspired the students to think about the problems with contact sports and head injuries. This led them to think about how the students play football at ME and LE recess. They decided to promote awareness of the problems with contact sports and to organize a flag football event for the LE and ME students.
They educated their peers about brain injury and will teach the PR3s proper use of the playground equipment to minimize head injuries.
